Ultimately, I decided Logan because I liked the various nicknames that came of it and that it is typically known as a boy name. I am now >Logan_bunny< Ი︵𐑼 Bunny came rather recently because my gf calls me that often when I am in a rather particularly goofy mood. Rolls of the tongue better than “l0ve” which was the previous surname I gave myself. And it was spelled with a zero which I hated.

why I ♡ it

Having this alias gives me an added layer of security and comfort in such a tumultuous world. I feel freedom to explore the nooks and crannies of my identity and sense of self. My creativity seeps through my skin like an amphibian’s poison that I hope to infect my audience with. I am Logan and Logan is me! 🎤

I also feel more of a barrier with Logan because for so so long I restricted myself online to protect my soul & mental health. Now I feel more of an alter ego.

♡ tip ♡ have all social media apps on an old phone !

The world is so so scary as a woman, even in a big city. LOL I haven't been able to find anything online and I don’t mean that in a “WOW i’m so original”-way but more of like ??? There has to be more people that do that! I also like to think that some (homophob*c) people from my younger days may speculate that I changed my name (cause i’m gay) - this makes me really happy. I don’t ever have to explain myself, I know that. But if you were curious! if it wasn’t going to cost us everything.” - Atmosphere, by Taylor Jenkins Reid

🚨 SPOILERS AHEAD 🚨

Discussion Questions -

NASA eventually gets wind of the romance between Joan and Vanessa. And Joan ends up becoming guardian of Frances. As a result of the two events, Joan breaks up with Vanessa in order to save Vanessa’s career. But Vanessa refuses to let Joan leave her behind. What did you think as those scenes were unfolding?

From Joans POV it is her own attempt at a last act of love. To her, it is caring more about Vanessa and less about herself. In this desperate selfless scene I understood exactly what was happening and I’m so relieved that Taylor wrote in Vanessas response. Their fight was very relatable and the context familiar. Vanessa’s openness and acceptance to sacrifice everything to stay with her depicts how deep that love goes.

How did reading about an adult woman in her thirties discovering and embracing her queerness feel to you?

I absolutely loved seeing how relatable this was ironically as a 26yo girl in LA, who has been “out” for 10 years. Though if I’m being honest that’s also a little sad. Joan embracing her queerness and inadvertently Vanessa too, was a final act of defiance knowing they would likely never get the opportunity to go in space again and even stay employed at NASA. My favorite was the author touching on how the different characters viewed queer-ness, how it was not as accepted in the 80’s, and how many disparities their were for women in the workforce let alone queer women.

How does societal expectation force Joan and Vanessa to constantly question the validity of their own feelings?

When the world is telling you what you cannot do - when they say you have bad moral compasses - you are sinful and wrong. You shouldn’t be around children. All because you love a woman?! It isn’t something you can turn off. You will still have love in your heart and simultaneously walk into a protest while getting groceries, you will see it in your reels and read it in the news. Joan and Vanessa experience this even further, every day at work on multiple levels - not just being queer but also being women. Constantly they are having to check themselves in their confidence and strategize how they can prove themselves and get what they want in their own ways!!!

We meet a big cast of characters including Vanessa, Griff, Lydia and more. Why was it important for us to get to know so many characters?

The ability to see the characters interact helps to thoroughly develop an understanding of their values and personality as a whole. Getting to know them was getting to know the time the story was set in. For example, Griff’s storyline with Joan helped us understand him as an ally and a friend in tumultuous times. Lydia’s whole experience and persona was build around the oppression of women in the workforce, at NASA and her intense battle to be seen and chosen by a man for space. Vanessa, Barbara, Joan - everyone had their own purpose in this novel to show or tell one story or another to encompass what Atmosphere represents.

“Every morning, I wake up and I think, ‘God, yes, her.’”

What about the Pride flag?

This book explores how the two women navigate their lesbian relationship in the 1980’s while also being in a male dominated, government-owned, field.

—

If NASA had flown the flag in the setting of Joan and Vanessa working there it would show support and positive indifference and completely change the trajectory of their experience there.

The Pride flag is a representation of all of the work that we as a queer community have done and have yet to do. To many, it is a safe space. From so many family members I hear, “why are you throwing it in my face” and “we live in America, fly an American flag instead”. This is ignorant! To fly a pride flag is to say, I see you, I accept you, I am here with you. It shows that you can be you 100% and you don’t have to hide any parts of you!

Surprise! Even in Los Angeles, the city of angels, a “left” state, a “blue” state - however you see it - I still cannot be open about my relationship with a woman. There are a number of factors that are entwined in this secret life of mine. Still, family doesn’t “agree”, the government is terrifying, and hate crimes happen. Even here. So no, I cannot take an after-church stroll, hand in hand. I cannot be whisked up off the ground and spun around for the sake of love and lust. There are a handful of things I cannot do. It is not an option, not a choice. Much like how Lydia didn’t have a choice in how she acted and reacted. How Joan and Vanessa didn’t have a choice but to sneak around.

THANK YOU for reading I would love to know what you thought about the book and if you have any comments or opinions I didn’t touch on in anticipation of pride month.

Love love love - always.
<div class="native-audio-embed" data-component-name="AudioPlaceholder" a new page into what type of media I consume, until recently. To start, I love YouTube and mainly watch content through this platform. I also keep all social media apps on a separate (old) phone - which I highly recommend.

╰┈➤ˎˊ˗ What I love(d) to watch was day in the life vlogs and for a while the extreme videos of, "traveling in the world’s most expensive train” type. I don’t have a ton of friends so seeing what other people my age are doing with their life I was obsessed about! And on the opposite end I wanted to see what all of these more luxury experiences included.

── .✦

Since I turned 26, just shy of 2 months ago, something shifted. I cannot positively identify what it is that changed nor can I deny the fact that it must be written in the stars or made to happen by God or the universe. I started crafting and creating MORE! I don’t have followers on my platforms and apart from my grandma and girlfriend I don’t think anyone reads my substack articles (though their audience is more than enough, I love you two so much!) I have found a fabulous mental boost within my little brain!

By creating more content for myself and learning more about whatever little passion project I have, I am finding a body / mind connection that was truly lacking before. Learning how to edit, reframing how I want to piece words together, and re-learning how to use a sewing machine, etc.! In this digital world I find a bigger and bigger disconnect with creators I used to watch and it isn’t enjoyable anymore! It’s kinda funny how predictable it is. For example, Coachella … Don’t get me wrong I still like to have a video playing and to watch DITL vlogs but I find myself searching more for smaller creators who have more relatability and talent in what I like.

people I enjoy lately »

Kitty Lever
<div class="embedded-publication-wrap" anything - even more so as a woman. Like many medical research, the information we know of comes from white men. This disparity causes so many unnecessary challenges: misdiagnoses, inappropriate treatments, delay of proper treatment, the list goes on…

Alport’s Syndrome1 is a genetically inherited disease that can affect the eyes, ears, tumor growth - but mostly impacts the kidneys. My father was diagnosed with Alport’s sometime when I was a child and (speaking only on my experience) I have had lab work suggest concern since I was a kid.

The medical system in the United States is inherently flawed and is something I could speak on for hours on end. To no surprise, no referrals were made and thankfully I maintained my levels. It wasn’t until I became a partial caregiver to my father in 2019 that I learned more of this diagnosis and potential impact on me and my siblings. Thanks to the Alport Syndrome Foundation (ASF) I was able to get me and my siblings genetically tested through Natera to see if we had it, OR were a carrier for it.

I was baffled that this was the trajectory that unfolded. How come my fathers previous nephrologists (Kidney doctors) didn’t automatically get us tested when it is known to be a genetically inherited disease? More so, if a male has (x-linked)2 Alport’s he will ALWAYS give it to his daughters3. Uhhhh hello???

Thankfully the Lord brought me to Los Angeles and the best doctors in the Alport’s North American universe reside here and I have been able to attend various webinars and learn more. That being said, if I wanted to learn more about this disease that slowly damages my kidneys - I had to be the one to inform myself! Even the “best of the best” are not capable of informing a patient on what they should know.

During this journey of almost 2 years now I have also learned the difference between a physician who holds an MD (Doctors of Medicine) versus a DO (Doctors of Osteopathic Medicine).

MD - Allopathic, focuses on a traditional approach to treating disease using medicine and technology

DO - Emphasizes a “whole person” approach, treating the patient as a whole rather than just specific symptoms.

Because I am blessed to have healthcare through my employer I have also had the opportunity to test out more holistic approaches to supporting my body through acupuncture and chiropractic medicine. This furthered my interest in learning more about Eastern medicine and the history of Western medicine. With all the red light therapy, sauna, dry brushing, biohacks, etc. flooding the internet I continuously dive deeper into research from credible sources.

Advocating for yourself as a woman - moreover any minority - is exhausting, never-ending, and necessary. I have gladly “broken up” with various doctors, reported to medical boards, and emailed hospital higher ups to report damaging care to patients. On one too many occasions I had to write up a list of how this can affect my body and what tests we should do, how often, what to look out for, etc.

Doctor: “Yeah so I see you have [REDACTED] value, you probably have Alport’s like your dad… what do you want me to do? What are you even here for?” - From my first nephrologist visit in 2019

NO ONE is going to do it for you, but you. NO ONE will care as much as you do. NO ONE will invest as much as you do. But also no one will benefit as much as you. Knowledge is power - is opportunity - is strength.

This journey of mine is a lifetime relationship that I must maintain and keep in check. The goal is to have my native kidneys working for as long as I shall live until death do us apart. So far, we haven’t had to invest in many interventions. ;)

─── ⋆⋅☆⋅⋆ ──

Some resources I recommend for learning about various treatments, the body, and Alport’s specifically:

Huberman Lab - Podcast

Alport Syndrome Foundation - Website

National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH) - an official U.S. Government Organization

Note: unsure of the validity of its content with the administration changes

Taiylor (@chronic_alchemy) on TikTok, a transplant doula and patient advocate

1

Syndrome versus Disease: Unlike diseases and disorders, a syndrome may not have a clear cause or pathophysiology, but it is recognized because of specific symptoms that tend to cluster together. Wanting to take up space - not apologize for the lack of it.

And now I do.

And somehow, that’s where things got… complicated.

Because no one really talks about what it feels like to gain the weight you once prayed for.

We only talk about weight gain as something to avoid, something to fix, something that happens to you. Not something you might have wanted. Not something you might have worked toward. Not something that could feel like both a win and a quiet identity crisis at the same time.

I look in the mirror now and see a version of myself I used to envy in other girls. And yet, there’s this weird internal dissonance - like my brain is still operating on rules I no longer believe in.

Because here’s the truth: even when you want to gain weight, you don’t get to opt out of the world you live in.

A world where thinness is still treated like a moral achievement. Where body image dissatisfaction is so common in women it’s practically considered “normal”. This is one of my favorite book series as of right now and I am on a bit of a high as I finished it fairly recently. One aspect of life I have been craving a missing lately are the essay questions assigned to us whilst in school so I created some for myself to share some thoughts on the story as a whole. I am not a part of a book club yet (my papi and I are starting one together soon) but I would like to imagine we are in functional medieval attire sipping tea from our goblets with a nice patchouli incense going in the room and a bonfire being the sole light from which we squint at one another drunk off of our

—

What role do mythical creatures (wyverns, Valg, etc.) play symbolically?

Simply put - they provide a sense of hope for the future.

The Little Folk guide Aelin throughout the series. The White Stag presents itself and important times when hope is low. The Wyverns, though bred in hope for the evil Valg, provide a sense of freedom for the Wastes for the witches and in such relationship show their loyalty and broadness in intellect as a creature that they even go on to fight on Aelin’s side of the war. The Valg even created a sense of hope for the antagonist prince as he hoped to invite his brothers that shunned him into exile in this universe.

Are there characters you judged differently once you saw their perspective (e.g., Manon)?

Definitely. I did not expect to be invited to see the perspectives of as many characters as we did. I did not think that some of them would end up being as involved or as important - other than the healer. I held onto that isolated interaction knowing it had to of held some kind of weight later on, but I digress. I would argue all main characters go through such intimate personal growth that they surprise themselves alongside us as readers.

Manon’s story is one of my favorite because it is such a slow burn. She battles a lot of internal thoughts that go unwritten but through the extensions of her (i.e. the 13) we see her shift uncomfortably into a newer, stronger version of herself.

Do characters truly have agency, or are they fulfilling inevitable roles?

This is a question into free will versus fate. While I think that this remains up to the author I believe that this is also what makes reading so enjoyable. Us readers have so much fatigue day-to-day that when we relax or escape even into these tales the idea of a prophecy seems so refreshing as if the path is already laid and things will work out into a storybook happy ending. However, we know that isn’t always the case #RIP Lion of Doranelle AND the 13…

It’s hard to think that any character has any sense of agency when their roles are written. Throughout the series we do get to see them question their “fate” per se. Manon as the heir to her grandmother and her transition into the queen of the Ironteeth and Crochan clans. Dorian questions the many hats he wears as a son, friend, leader, one of two descendants of Brannon and Mala, etc. Ultimately a good story will show both aspects of a character as they grow and have that development. The characters in this series show a variety of paths that seem to be unavoidable but ultimately a new path can be created or revealed over time.

This consideration both challenges and strengthens the “chosen one” narrative.

Compare different leadership styles (Aelin, Dorian, Chaol, Manon). Which is most effective—and why?

Aelin’s leadership style is definitely democratic as she - at various stops in the series - has her team vote on actions that must be taken, regardless of her desires. She holds a strong front and always seems to have a plan or two in mind when looking at the bigger picture of everything.

Dorian’s style is that of an absent father. Initially he is a great leader when he first steps into the role as he appoints those he trusts into positions worthy of the beholders, attempts to right many wrongs set forth by his demon-possessed father. This doesn’t last long though as he sets to start his journey into healing himself and salvaging a ran-sacked city. In the end I think he will make a great leader but one with issues, still.

Chaol’s leadership style is one that I am having the hardest time describing?? I know he has a valuable perspective coming from a royal position himself to being the right hand of the prince to then the king - then as eye candy to the best healer in the world?? He takes a lot of introspective thought into the work that other soldiers go through and acknowledges that camaraderie.

Manon is cutthroat and one of my favorite characters. Very brutal, very loyal, and a tight-knit grouping that works as one. Due to the culture of the witches I think that this leadership style would work no-where outside of that demographic, however with the tragedy that is the last book I see her leadership start to change as she looks to the Crochans more and more alongside Petrah and others while navigating the new crown she must bear.

How does trauma shape leadership and decision-making?

The biggest symbolism of this is seen through the tattoo-ing of the fallen soldiers on Aelin, Rowan, and his comrades. At a certain point the fatigue of trying to process traumas while in survival mode and holding the actual weight of the world on their shoulders weighs on them. It shows itself as decision fatigue, “why me” thinking, victimization of oneself as though they feel they deserve it all through a sort of self sabotaging cycle. Ultimately trauma shapes the characters into who they are as they make mistakes or experience hardships it teaches a new lesson of perseverance, adaptability, and understanding at a much broader scope than before. We see it in Maeve where her past shaped her into her leadership and decision-making style as an antagonist. We also see it in Aelin as she considers everyone in the team from a democratic standpoint.

—

Additional questions for your use that I love:

How does Aelin’s shifting identity (Celaena → Aelin) challenge the idea of selfhood—are we defined more by our past or our choices?

In what ways do characters like Dorian, Chaol, and Manon struggle with internal vs. external expectations of who they “should” be?

How does the series explore systems of oppression (magic bans, slavery, conquest)?

—

Thank you for reading and I hope we share the same sentiments on how a book club may go. I have the idea to do this with every book I read rather than a whole series but we! shall! see!

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" cuts in traffic knowingly…

every time an able-bodied, neurotypical child is handed an iPad - heavily judged and a swarm unites

buying plastic drink bottles or produce in plastic - beware.

when people pass a flower on a walk without a brief sniff

foregoing picking up your dogs poo, definitely repels them from coming out,, so stinky and contaminates everything

using aerosol sunscreen - it’s so toxic that it burns their skin

they avoid areas where people don’t use their elbow for sneezes or coughs FOR SURE

ppl who say they aren’t into politics ++ they get bad luck, too

This is an issue for everyone that cares to have a tree for shade or a park to picnic. It can also be applicable for those who want to have land or eat animal products or consume animal byproducts. Otherwise you will be haunted forever!!!!!!!!!!

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" young I attended church and from my memory enjoyed it, I liked the crafts and my friends - I always wanted the donut holes that they sometimes put out. This is my earliest memory of a church. Flash forward to adolescence my mom and dad (at separate times, post-divorce) mentioned wanting to go as a family. I physically in my body felt uncomfortable with that idea and protested with all of my might. I’m still uncertain why I felt this way, in fact I still feel this way with country music (idk bro).

Anyway in high school I wanted to make friends and I thought what better way than to join Young Life!! I mean they brought donuts to school they can’t be that bad of a crowd, right? WRONG. At this ripe age of around 15 I knew I was queer - but it wasn’t as prevalent in my life. I didn’t want to go somewhere where it was taught that this part of my identity was wrong. As I tried to deduce this I went to a few events. One where I cried randomly! I think the community and immense faith really moved me, it still does. Ultimately I stopped attending because this crowd wasn’t as open to discussing things to the extent that my curious brain needed. It oddly felt like if I didn’t attend all the events I wasn’t “in” the group if that makes sense?

Before I time-jump to last year where I began seeking more spiritual guidance I want to discuss what I have always known to be true to me.

Mother Nature is her own being and in it of itself also the Universe. I have always believed - in as much of a normal way as you can - that the wind speaks to me and the universe guides me if I pay attention

If I respect nature she will respect me.

There is a higher power of some sort!! Just, I don’t know?!!

As I discussed all of this with my spiritual counselor I felt my biggest frustration is that I think people turn to God when things get too hard or sad. I felt it was unfair to Him and it didn’t feel right. I wasn’t sure how to praise him in the way that I felt worked best as I am ~still~ church hunting. I want to learn about all of the Gods that people pray to and hold close to their hearts while also finding my God.

All this goes to say I still am working on my faith and I am reading the Old and New Testament. I also want to read the Quran! Hit me up if you have the Bible app we can be friends on there and I am always open to talking about this because for some reason it feels taboo? It makes me a little sad to see this socially. If it’s a part of your life why shy away - even if you’re atheist - tell me more! I am still early in my journey but I know my God is real and my faith has so much room to grow. People interpret and believe in Him in so many ways and I don’t believe them to be “wrong” or “right”.

In fact - I think this is funny - growing up even when I wasn’t sure He was real I would still pray and I have felt insecure until recently about my prayer as it would typically be “Hey God, I hope you’re having a good day and I wanted to say Hi and thx for all u do!!”. I now realize people may have a more private relationship with Him and maybe they praise him differently, maybe they don’t want to talk about it because maybe they too are on their own journey that they are still navigating! Agh until next time.

With love,

25 things I learned in 25 years

younger siblings I am looking @ you

Logan

I have so many thoughts I want to share but feel like I don’t have the right vocabulary to accurately share them - though I am also fearful of being perceived, who isn’t?

Unfortunately though simultaneously fortunately I will be turning 1 year older very soon and I have always desired to start a blog and share my life. From the tip of every branch, like a fat purple fig, a wonderful future beckoned and winked. One fig was a husband and a happy home and children, and another fig was a famous poet and another fig was a brilliant professor, and another fig was Ee Gee, the amazing editor, and another fig was Europe and Africa and South America, and another fig was Constantin and Socrates and Attila and a pack of other lovers with queer names and offbeat professions, and another fig was an Olympic lady crew champion, and beyond and above these figs were many more figs I couldn’t quite make out. I saw myself sitting in the crotch of this fig tree, starving to death, just because I couldn’t make up my mind which of the figs I would choose. I wanted each and every one of them, but choosing one meant losing all the rest, and, as I sat there, unable to decide, the figs began to wrinkle and go black, and, one by one, they plopped to the ground at my feet. - Sylvia Plath: The Bell Jar

“No” is a full sentence.

Life gets a lot easier when you stop forcing
